Gudhjem Museum

ART, HISTORY and NATURE come together here in one and the same place

Gudhjem Museum

shows changing exhibitions with a focus on Bornholm art and handicrafts in the bright and inviting exhibition hall.

In the listed station building from 1916, you can immerse yourself in the history of Gudhjem and the railway. The building’s unique architecture and original interiors are in themselves worth a visit.

The art

The new exhibition building from 1990, designed by architect Niels Frithiof Truelsen, was created for the exhibition of art and crafts with a nice incidence of light and good space.

During the 2024 season, 5 different exhibitions of new Bornholm art and crafts will be shown. A regular feature is the artists’ association ‘Holkahesten’s summer exhibition. See the exhibition program on the museum’s website.

The story

The old railway station, designed by architects Kay Fisker and Aage Rafn, forms the setting for the storytelling. The building was inaugurated in 1916 and served as the terminus of the Gudhjembanen until it was closed in 1953.

In the station building’s original packing room, you can delve into the history of the local railway between Almindingen and Gudhjem. Gudhjem Museum has chosen to dedicate other rooms of the station to an exhibition of works by Aage Schad, who worked in Gudhjem in the 1900s, and who today is being completely forgotten, even though he was once recognized and famous – also abroad.

In the old vestibule you can see the exhibition “Find the motif”, which will inspire you to go out into the city and find the same motifs that artists have depicted in their paintings over time. With the help of a map where the artist’s position is indicated, you can rediscover houses and the landscape as it appears today. The map is free and available at the museum.

The nature

In front of the museum, you find a 15,000 m2 field that has been laid out as a habitat for wild plants and butterflies. Footpaths and impressive granite sculptures are part of the field’s decor. Go exploring and enjoy the magnificent view of the countryside and the Baltic Sea.

The sculpture garden with works by Ole Christensen, Inge Lise Westman, Julie Høm and Jun-Ichi Inoue forms a connection between the museum buildings and the butterfly field.

A room for reflection

The museum’s sketch collection with works by, among others Oluf Høst, has been scanned in and is displayed on a screen in the same room, where a selection of the sketches is hung. In the same place, you can sit quietly and look at the books and pamphlets that are for sale in the shop.

Local history archive

The museum has an exciting image archive with photos and stories about life in the old Gudhjem.

There are no fixed opening hours at the archive, but visits can be arranged individually by contacting the archive.
